Based on the definition of Decoupage on Britannica.com, it is a french word “cutting out”, “the art of cutting and pasting cutouts to simulate painting on a wood, metal, or a glass surface.” It is a type of art “influenced by a tradition of cut work that includes the paper cutting of the ancient Chinese, the felt appliqués found among the Siberian peoples, and the Polish folk art of paper cutting, decoupage originated in France in the 17th century as a means of decorating bookcases, cabinets, and other pieces of furniture.”

Artist Viveca Moller is passionate about art and she is a master of decoupage art. She likes to collect papers with different patterns for later decoupage on glass creation. Decoupage art seems easy which requires relatively fewer skills compare to other types of art, and fewer materials: container, papers, cutter and glue only. Indeed, it is a type of art requires a lot of time and efforts, the criteria of making a decoupage art seems easy but it takes a lot of practices in order to master the skills.

Viveca’s Decoupage on Glass has basically transformed a boring plain glass bowl to an interesting one, which has brought the glass bowl back to alive or added value as a fancy decorated bowl. From deciding a theme for the bowl, selecting their background with the desired pattern and colour for the inside and outside, it requires deep consideration and flows with the creativity to make each bowl stands out from another, cutting paper, applying glue on the fragment and putting them on the right place of the bowl. Ruler, cutter and dry towel are 3 of the essential tools for measuring, cutting the extra paper and wiping off extra glue to avoid wrinkles which may affect the final result. Whenever a layer is finished, it is needed to wait at least a couple of hours or even a day until the materials to dry completely before starting a second layer. When the decoupage work is finished, it requires a few days for vanishing. The artwork needs to coat with several layers of protection in order to reduce the chance of damaging from moist. Decoupage art is time-consuming, however, I believe artist Viveca has had a lot of joys on making it and feeling satisfied with her pieces. I really appreciate her creative works.
